ANGELA HAWSE - Himalayan Alpinist, AMGA Certified Rock Guide, Athlete, Motivational Speaker, Pro Ski Patroller and Technical Rigger.
Angela is one of the most experienced and accomplished women guides in North America. Her enthusiasm for life is deep seated in a passion for mountains and over two decades of sharing her dreams, exploring remote corners of the world. Angela has led 20+ high altitude expeditions, including 5 on Denali, and her endeavors have taken her from ski traverses of Lapland to the second highest point on earth, the South Summit of Mt. Everest, at 28,875ft. She has climbed throughout Nepal, Pakistan, India, Patagonia, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, Canada, Alaska, and extensively in the U.S.
For the past 22 years, Angela has worked as a professional climbing guide and instructor for some of the country's most respected organizations; Exum Mountain Guides, the American Alpine Institute, Mountain Madness, Prescott College, and Outward Bound amongst others. She has been an advocate for women's programs, guided for Chicks with Picks for 7 seasons, Women that Rock, Chicks on Cracks and Women's Clinics at events for her sponsors. She is on the elite Instructor Pool for the American Mountain Guides Association and currently serves as the Vice President for the AMGA's Board of Directors, on her second elected term. Within the next two years, Angela aspires to complete the IFMGA full mountain guide certification.
A specialist at wedding service with adventure, Angela earned a Master of Arts degree in 2001, for her work in International Mountain Conservation. As Deputy Leader, she was instrumental to the success of the 1998 Everest Challenge, which made the First Disabled Ascent of Mt. Everest. With Angela's leadership the team's Sherpa carried out a major clean-up high on the mountain. In conjunction with the expedition, she organized and taught an 18-credit course for a small group of Prescott College students who carried out service work in the Khumbu Valley while the expedition was on the mountain. In 2001, she led another successful expedition to Aconcagua, and again carried out a major clean-up high on the mountain.
Much of Angela's service endeavors have been carried out in the Nepal Himalaya, where she has worked to protect the Mountain Porter, trained women to work as guides and led expeditions to high peaks with service components. In 2003, she guided an all women's ascent of Ama Dablam, 22,545', leading her team, without the support of high-altitude Sherpa, to the top of this technical peak while at the same time raising over $23,000 to start a safe house for girls in the region.
Angela considers herself a Jack of All Trades and Master of None. She is versed in all disciplines of climbing and mountain fun, four seasons of the year. In addition to guiding, Angela has been a product tester for Nike and has worked with Alpinist Magazine's Mountain Standards Program as a Panelist since it's inception. She is a proud and devoted ambassador for her sponsors and has played a key role testing and developing innovative products.
