The three most beautiful hikes in Lombardy
Known for its industrial and financial relevance, Lombardy presents itself as a dynamic and industrious region, constantly moving around its beating heart: Milan, the hub of the economy and cultural life.
Alongside this image of efficiency and modernity, the region also preserves a natural heritage of great prestige. Lombardy boasts lakes famous all over the world, lush valleys, unspoiled alpine areas, thermal oases, and plains outlined by the ordered geometry of cultivated fields. It is no coincidence that it is known as the “region of lakes,” with more than 15 bodies of water, each with a unique and unmistakable charm. Thanks to the three routes we have selected for you, you can enjoy unique panoramic points. Are you ready to get lost in the variety of Lombardy’s landscapes and discover its green side?
HIKE IN VAL VERTOVA
DURATION: 1 hour
TOTAL DISTANCE: 10.55 km
ELEVATION GAIN: 279 m
STARTING POINT: municipal parking areas in the village of Vertova
RECOMMENDED SHOE: Rush TRK GTX
We are in Val Vertova, at the gates of Bergamo, in one of the most striking corners of Val Seriana. This is the perfect destination for an easy hike in Lombardy, in a place that seems to have come straight out of a Disney fantasy. Here, natural turquoise pools, waterfalls, and sheer rock walls covered with lush vegetation alternate. With the right mountain walking shoes, you can admire all this on a simple trekking route and refresh yourself in the (icy) water basins you will encounter along the way. The valley stretches for 12 kilometers and is crossed by the Vertova stream, whose blue, crystalline waters have earned it the nickname “the Maldives of Bergamo.” Access to Val Vertova is permitted all year round, although in summer it is necessary to purchase an entrance ticket available on their website. Whether with family or alone, this is the perfect place to spend a day breathing fresh air and revitalizing body and soul.
HIKE IN VAL DI MELLO
DURATION: 2 hours
TOTAL DISTANCE: 9 km
ELEVATION GAIN: 250 m
STARTING POINT: village of San Martino Valmasino
RECOMMENDED SHOE: Mojito Trail
A true corner of paradise in Lombardy, in the province of Sondrio. A splendid Natural Reserve made up of waterfalls and small lakes in a fairy-tale setting, known as the “Little Yosemite.” The best starting point for exploration is the village of San Martino Valmasino, from where several trails lead along the most beautiful panoramic points. Shortly after entering the reserve, you reach the beautiful Qualido lake and the famous “Bidet della Contessa,” characterized by crystalline waters reflecting the mountains. The route continues through the forest, reaching Cà di Carna, where you can take a break. Soon after, you will see a cluster of mountain huts and, on the left, admire the Zocca waterfall surrounded by trees. At this point, you will be almost at the bottom of Val di Mello, at the Chiusa waterfall. You can choose to continue further to admire the basin of Alpe Pioda. The view here is spectacular! Just remember to wear proper hiking shoes and enjoy this destination that combines wonderful trekking, climbing, and breathtaking landscapes.
HIKE TO THE FELLARIA GLACIER
DURATION: 5.5 hours
TOTAL DISTANCE: 12 km
ELEVATION GAIN: 750 m
STARTING POINT: Alpe di Gera Dam parking area
RECOMMENDED SHOE: Mescalito TRK GTX
This is definitely one of the most beautiful treks in Lombardy. An emotional place where silence reigns and there is space for reflection. We are in the upper Valmalenco: the glacier rises above 3,500 meters in the frozen desert of the Fellaria Plateau. The landscape strongly resembles that of Iceland and, in front of the imposing glacier, you can sadly witness the state of health of our Planet. This place is one of the tangible testimonies that climate change caused by global warming is visibly transforming the Earth. Just think that in 1850 it extended for about 23 square kilometers, while today it has shrunk by about 9 square kilometers, and its front has split in two, forming the Fellaria West and Fellaria East. Hearing the sound of ice blocks breaking off the walls and falling into the water will confront you with a truth difficult to accept. The trail to the glacier is somewhat demanding but feasible, obviously with suitable mountain shoes. The full hike takes between 5 and 6 hours depending on your fitness level (always check the weather before setting off). It is a moving experience that will stay with you and deepen your awareness — not to be missed!
