WALK TO LAKE DOBBIACO
DURATION: 1 hour 30 minutes
TOTAL DISTANCE: 4.5 km
ELEVATION GAIN: none
STARTING POINT: large parking lot of the Nordic Arena, Dobbiaco
RECOMMENDED SHOE: Mojito Trail
This is a destination we recommend in the wonderful region of Trentino Alto Adige, where you can take an easy and relaxing walk. A small alpine lake, of landslide origin, located in Val Pusteria at 1,251 m a.s.l. in the municipality of Dobbiaco. The lake is a beautiful and relatively small body of water situated at the border between two natural parks, the Sesto Dolomites and Fanes-Senes-Braies. The water is as crystalline as it is icy, and swimming is not recommended even in summer, but you can enjoy wonderful boat or pedal boat rides. In the cold seasons, when the lake is completely frozen, curling can be practiced, or you can simply walk on the ice. In 2000, a fantastic trail was built, designed for families. The starting point is along the lake’s nature path, but you can extend it and start from Seghe, in Dobbiaco. After a pleasant 15–20 minute walk, the lake appears in all its splendor. Although the walk does not require special effort, we always recommend wearing trekking shoes. A true adventure in nature! A place rich in history and beauty, ideal for spending a day with family or alone, far from everyday stress.
WALK TO LAKE BRAIES
DURATION: 1 hour 30 minutes
TOTAL DISTANCE: 3.6 km
ELEVATION GAIN: none
STARTING POINT: Hotel Lago di Braies
RECOMMENDED SHOE: Rush 2 GTX
Raise your hand if you don’t know this natural wonder. This is one of the most beautiful hikes in Alto Adige, one of the most photographed lakes in the world and among the most enchanting, the “Pearl of the Dolomites.” It is a small alpine lake located in Val di Braies at 1,496 m a.s.l. in the Province of Bolzano. The emerald green lake is set in the breathtaking mountainous scenery of the Dolomites. Its waters reach a depth of 36 meters, making it one of the deepest lakes in the region. You can take a pleasant walk, wearing appropriate hiking clothing and shoes, following its perimeter, or rent one of the iconic wooden boats to enjoy a fantastic view. The lake is suitable for swimming, but only the bravest manage to dive into its icy waters. It is also an ideal starting point for several mountain hikes. This natural jewel, set in a splendid Dolomite landscape, is the perfect place for a day trip combining trekking and relaxation. To enjoy the lake in peace, we recommend visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon, especially during high season.
WALK TO THE RIO SASS CANYON
DURATION: 2 hours
TOTAL DISTANCE: 2.5 km
ELEVATION GAIN: 145 m
STARTING POINT: Fondo
RECOMMENDED SHOE: Mojito Hike GTX
A unique excursion in Trentino Alto Adige: an evocative canyon located in the municipality of Fondo, in the Upper Val di Non, Province of Trento. In the historic center of Fondo, a deep gorge carved over millennia by the rushing waters of the Rio Sass divides the town in two. The canyon takes its name from the stream. It can be visited thanks to the installation of ladders and suspended walkways, with stairways to climb and descend in both directions, for a total of 600 steps and about two hours of walking. Along the way, you can see waterfalls, stalagmites, stalactites, giant’s kettles, colonies of red algae, and fossils. Once outside the narrow gorge, you reach a dam dating back to the 1700s, built with tree trunks. Descending further, you will find the remains of the old thermal baths “Bagni di Fondo,” active from the mid-1800s until the mid-1900s. History tells that Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary and his wife Sissi also stayed at this spa. An exciting experience suitable for everyone that will lead you to discover a fascinating world. The canyon is open from April to November and can only be visited with a guided tour by reservation. Always remember to dress appropriately and wear trekking shoes!
